Except is an integrated sustainability consultancy and design firm. Since 1999 we work on providing solutions for complex problems in society, spanning from energy issues to materials, transportation, policy, agriculture, industry, the built environment and many more. Our aim is to help society develop towards a truly sustainable world. We leverage smart 2.0 solutions in combination with proper scientific methods to achieve this goal.
At Except we believe sustainability is all-encompassing, not as a theme but as an integral part of everything we do. It requires succcesful social and economic models in addition to environmental solutions. Therefore we develop solutions that allow for the development of a better environment, vastly increased investment continuity and returns, and results in greater social welfare.
Except's services are applied in a broad range of fields. As a consultancy we work for governments and companies globally, helping them determine the next step towards sustainability. As a design firm we help develop architectural, planning and product concepts that make sustainability practical, executable, profitable and enjoyable.
We've developed the design methodology Symbiosis in Design that captures our inclusive approach, and guides our development and communication with clients through themes that reach much further than energy and material issues, and provide second generation investment opportunities.

The people of Except have been educated as experts in their field, such as industrial ecologists, biologists, economists, architects and planners, and have subsequently developed themselves into strategic generalists.

Except's Vision
The current heading of society does not allow us to meet climate change criteria set forth by the international community. In addition to this there are a myriad of environmental and societal problems that are equally important but receive far less media attention. Things are changing rapidly underneath our feet and we need to move along to keep up, developing new knowledge and new structures to manage the large changes required in our society.
Understanding proper sustainability methods is vital to provide next generations with a rich, invigorating and socially engaging world. Looking at the world as a complex system where every part interacts with every other part is essential to under-standing our world and making it better. These are complex systems, requiring knowledge from many different fields. Our education system has lead to overspecialisation, causing our general understanding to crumble. We need to learn how to work together in new ways to reconstruct this vital ability.
In addition, classic investment schemes have become so ubiquitous that more profitable ways of ope-rating are often disregarded before they are tried. There are great op-portunities that can be used if these new systems are embraced. Evidence of this is visible all around us.
Optimizing teamwork within the devlivery chain is one of the surest ways of achieving goals and cutting costs. We believe this can work in an economically advantageous way, with increased payoffs and lower overheads.
That's why Except performs its own research and develops methods to streamline decision making processes on governmental, corporate and personal levels. Much of this research informs subsequent projects, and is distributed among participants of the industry.
