Anastasia Papangelou

Anastasia is an engineer, both by education and at heart. She has a thing for taking things apart and looking at them backwards, upside-down and inside-out, in order to understand exactly what is going on and why. At Except she brings her passion and expertise for her internship.

Anastasia’s curiosity, coupled with the commitment to make a positive impact on the planet, has been her driving force since her school years in Greece. This is what eventually took her to Zurich to study Environmental Engineering, and after that to Egypt, Germany and Namibia to work on water-related issues. She has been involved in projects on decentralized sanitation planning, integrated water resources management and the environmental impact of nutrients in surface waters.

Currently, she is a Marie Curie ITN fellow for the SUSPLACE project and a PhD candidate at KU Leuven. There, she studies ways to improve the circulation of food and nutrients in cities, so that they become more resource-wise and self-sufficient and develop a healthier relationship with their hinterland. To do that, she mainly applies Industrial Ecology tools while integrating them with social, cultural and institutional aspects, towards a holistic understanding of urban food systems.

When not dedicated to her work, she keeps her creativity rolling and her capacity to listen sharp through improvisation theatre.
