You won’t believe it! I know you won’t. But it’s true. We have… a building! More exclamation marks!
Yes, it is true, the collective has space, and it’s an awesome space… and you can be a part of this starting… now!
The building is more in the center of Rotterdam than the center itself, and one big plus is that it’s right above the Skihut bar, which I know you like. It’s on a the Stadhuisplein square next to the ‘lijnbaan’ shopping district, on the fourth floor. It’s important to mention that there’s no elevator. It’s about 340m2 and perfectly democratic in its configuration… everyone can have a window spot. It has 11 spaces.
We have the building for at least three years, and a projected two years beyond that. It’s in decent condition, some cosmetic changes to be made by us. We move in January 1st, but we’ll have access to the building in a few days to start painting and whatnot.
In order to make the finances work, we’ve dimmed some of the ‘managerial’ work of Richard and myself. This means lower rent, and more initiative left to the members of the collective.

Tom and I have decided that right now the deal with Container about Delftseplein 36 isn’t good enough. Like said before the can’t guarantee the space for more than one and a half year. They are going to fix and paint the space themselves now. Sounds good, but this means they want a higher rent for the place. Next to that, the other space on the floor got rent out to a salsaschool. Good for those who’d like to improve on their dancing skills. Bad for those who like to work in the evening and aren’t big fans of salsa (that includes Tom and me)
Sorry to those who had their minds set up on this place, but without a good deal we can’t start this project.

We have got an alternative offer which has nothing to do with Container.
Vestia recently bought the HAKA building near Marconiplein.
It looks like this.
It’s a huge beautiful monster.
The building is empty. Right now plans are being made for the first phase of development. The idea is that departments of Gemeentewerken, DS+V, Vestia and others will take a place in the building. Other spaces will be occupied by more creative businesses. The Rotterdam municipality wants to be able to actively involve these creatives in solving problems in the city. There will be a big communal shared space, which could be used for expo’s, lectures and other events.
Our idea of working in a shared space with people who’d like to be involved in something bigger than their own business would fit very well and we have hope that a lot of you would like to join us in this project.
For some of you the HAKA building will probably be less interesting because of its location. There are a lot of things developing in this area but it isn’t exactly next to Rotterdam central station. There won’t be salsaschool though and as far as we can say now it will be cheaper to rent.
We would really like to get everyone who showed interest together to discuss our further steps. We’ll propose a date to drink some beers somewhere in the sun. First I’m away for a two-week vacation. Tom is back in town, so contact him with questions.

Ok you may have noticed the no-updates of late. I’m sorry about this, it’s just that there’s been very little to update. The owners of the TV Rijnmond tower are exceedingly slow in their response and negotiations, and we’re not very much further than we were late last year. We made a proposition, and have not heard from them since, despite some egging-on.
However, all is not lost, because meanwhile we’ve been looking at other properties. Today out of nowhere something materialized that looks very interesting indeed. The following is the case:
A company called Container is renting a large 6000 m2 building right next to the central train station in Rotterdam. They are renting it from a project developer (LSI), on uncertain terms (1.5 years guaranteed, everything after that is bonus). They’ve set up a concept and are renting out bits and pieces to creative industries. Nothing special so far.
However, on the ground floor of the building a company was housed that only just left. They now have a basement (700 m2) and 650m2 of very nice space for rent. They offer both as-is and somewhat-finished renting options which might save us a lot of hassle.
It consists of two large spaces, each of about 325 m2. One of them has skylights that give gorgeous light. The two spaces are bisected by a shared hallway that can be used as a lunch space, or a gallery of sorts. Still in use but soon to be available at the back is a loading dock that can function as a small gallery space. It has some nice level changes.
The financial proposition is pretty good, and by going down this route we would save on administrative and management hassle, as the building is mostly taken care of by container. We’d only have to deal with the services, not with the lease with LSI, energy, repairs, etc. Container is a very enthusiastic party, they like our concept a lot, and are willing to give us slack both financially and organization wise. Tomorrow we’re going again to visit the place with a larger group of people (please join).
Something worthwhile noting is that with the current economy, and the terrible slowness of the city of Rotterdam’s decision making process, this building might last us well beyond 1.5 years. We would also have to have 30 people to make this work. So, if you have friends that you think would be interested, let them know, so they can be the first to fill out the ranks.

Hey all!
Today I visited the TV Rijnmond building with a small horde of real estate agents. The building is a 40’s modernist building that isn’t good enough to be a monument, but it was visited to see if it would be or not. It isn’t the perfect building, but it does have atmosphere, it’s centrally located (click here for map) and offers some interesting options.
The building is a former headquarters for the regional TV station ‘TV Rijnmond’. Don’t get any hip thoughts, they’re a tiny operation, the building is only 1000 m2. It’s 5 stories high, a tower-like thing as each floor is about 150 m2. There’s two annexes tacked onto it at the back. Each floor is highly subdivided, with the largest room to my estimation being no more than 40 m2. This means it interferes with some of our visions and ideals. The way I see it is that it could be used as a interim solution, which isn’t as expensive as a full-fledged building for the period where we’re trying to group together everyone. We can still work together quite well, there’s a small roof terrace with kitchen which used to be a private apartment that can serve as pingpongtable location and funness space.
To my tastes, it’s rather a fun building. Not for disabled or handicapped people though, as it’s riddled with stairs and level changes. The rooms are light and have original steel subdivided windows like the Van Nelle factory. It has all sorts of nooks and crannies, it has a wooden elevator you can easily fit a garden gnome in. Or a big bag of cookies. It has a tiny hidden central circular staircase and… a roof terrace! (yes I mentioned that but I’m loving it).We can do all kinds of stuff to it since they are going to gut it after we would leave anyway for restoration. We can break down any non-bearing wall, construct funky installations and use the kids from the daycare center out back for science experiments.
The state of the building is poor. There’s very bad and damaged carpet in most places, not all windows close very well, and it’s full of old cabling, the odd chair and desk, and other crap we might make use of. The price quoted to us translates to about 100 euro per square meter per year, which means we need about 30 people to keep the rent low… but then each person has quire a lot of space (25+ m2). A few rooms can’t really function as work space because they’re small. We could reserve some rooms in the basement which has low light for work-shop or shady purposes. We have to take into account a high energy bill due to the napkin-thin windows and steel cold-bridge window frames.
Our name
We’ve called the initiative ‘Kubus’ for a while for want of a better one. But really, it’s kinda stupid, and we wanted to have all of you participate in naming the organization, possibly related to the building we are to occupy. But since a final building doesn’t seem very wise to occupy because of financial reasons, we are likely to go into a temporary building first. This means we don’t need to wait to go into one to think of a name… Hereby I open the Kubu-Naming project as our first official one. Everyone is invited to suggest names, so put on your thinking hat, use recreational drugs, pet the cat, whatever works for you, and reply to this message with some really awesome, wacky, rediculous and possibly useful names!

The last few weeks have been littered with meeting with Real Estate brokers, city governments and odd intermediaries. It’s now looking increasingly possible to have a building before the year is out. We’ve been receiving some exciting offers, and we’re visiting them one by one.
Some of these are more suitable for our plans than others, but it might be necessary to move into a temporary space at first. With things developing so rapidly, it becomes important that we know the status of everyone’s involvement. If we start, we would prefer to start with a full house to have all the help we can to make this thing really big, and to have a good group of people to help build the initiative.
Could you all please send me an email outlining your intentions and schedule? We can then take this into account in the negotiations.

Hey all, and sorry about the long delay in updating. Things are certainly happening, just not too much to report about.
Here’s what has occured over the last few months:
We’ve had two meetings with the city of Rotterdam. Due to some people going away, changing jobs and sabatticals we’ve been ping-ponged between different people which has delayed some things. However we’re settled now (it seems), with someone who’s really putting her effort into it.
We’ve received information about several buildings that would be possibly within our reach to occupy.

You can’t get more central than this. Although this building is hidden from the street, it sits right next to the central station and would bea great location. It’s a round building and we’ll soon check this out for its possibilities.

Also right next ot central station, this is a huge building, which hasrecently been redeveloped. There is space available in this building, but it remains to be seen if this is halfway suitable for us, and not all subdivided on the 14th floor.

And old building of the Stadswonen corporation that would be available for creative companies.This building is located in South Rotterdam which is an area very few people like. However, active development is booming there, and many cultural enterprises are being moved there. This might be the perfect area for our initiative if we wish to help the city relocate part of its cultural center there. That said, it’s a pretty dismal place, not suited for this kind of thing, and many doubt if the city is being smart about relocating things there. I personally certainly don’t think so.

Okay I’ve been much too quiet. Sorry guys, my finals are up for graduation and my chapel is taking shape as it never did before, so I find myself engrossed in designing trees most of the day. Yay!
Some heads up on the progress…
We’ve had continued enthusiastic correspondence with the OBR (city of Rotterdam development group), and Richard had a great meeting. Our main contact has switched but this seems to be a positive development. We were asked to disambiguate lots of things which we have been trying to do to the best of our capacity. Currently we face the financial questions which tightly relate to the space requirements for our little adventure. We have also been in contact with lads at Creative Cube, which seem interested in a possible collaboration, which is really exciting.

Lately, I’ve been spending time in a few different advertising agencies both inside and outside California and have begin to find some things that are important to me.
1. Natural Light - It’s not always possible in every section of the office or building to have natural light flowing in, but having some sort of window to outside with natural light is crucial to me. The more I feel like I’m outside, the less I mind being inside.
2. Music - It’s already been mentioned, but a music system incorporating a smart playlist and the capability to be soft during the day and much louder with DJ equipment hooked in during agency events.
3. Large amounts of communal space, without barriers - One of my favorite angencies to work in is primarily two big rooms where everyone works, from low level to boss/owner. No one is set apart, or hard to reach, besides for the obvious reasons of being busy.
4. Excerise - I’m by no means a gym rat or “meat head” but I do enjoy having a pull up bar, and some free weights in an area near my work space. Both for this area, and in general it would be great to have a full bathroom with shower. It can come in handy pretty often.
5. Food and Drink - I’m sure its obvious, but worth mentioning. A kitchen area with at least a refrigerator and freezer, as well as a microwave is crucial. It’s a place to store the lunch you bring in, or just the go to spot to grab the widest variety of drinks possible, including a beer to pop open around 5pm. I do not know if anyone in the culinary arts is being included in this venture at the moment, but a more full scale kitchen may be required for their inclusion.
That’s what came to mind over the last few days. Basic to be sure, but worth throwing out there. Have a good rest of the week everyone.

- We are very enthusiastic and excited about your poroposal, but have many questions as well.
- We need you to formulate and present a financial plan
- Do you have connections which will bring in assignments for the organization?
- We would like you to present to us specific buildings to look at.
The idea is that the OBR will buy a building for us, do the renovatuions necessary, and then receive market rate rent after a few years of start-up. This coincides with our ideas, except that we didn’t think they would do the renovations for us. This also means we have a few years to sort out our mess before the real world starts to invade on us. We will have momentum by then to secure subsidies to keep rents low.

hi everyone, let me introduce myself - my name is george wong, i met tom on a joint-studio architectural/urbanistic work last year, which he introduced me to this project. i’m very much interested in the idea of a cross-disiplinary creative environment+collabration and i share the enthusiasm that many of you have already vividly expressed.
my interest lies across the depiction/representation of fictional realities/ storyboard in the realm/ thresholds between art, design, filmic and architectural space. having studied in london and did a bit of random stuff here and there, i’m currently back to school again, tackling a full-time postgraduate degree in architectural design @ the university of hong kong, my previous works span from individual and freelance stop-motion animations/ animated films to graphic and architectural designs.
it’s my pleasure to meet all of you here and, although i honestly don’t know when/if i can turn up @ rotterdam in reality yet, i do hope we can meet in person to share our interests soon.

Currently I am preparing the document for the city of Rotterdam. Most of the write up has been done, and then Richard will go over it, approve, append, change, maim and torture the document until it is new fresh and sparkling. We’ll then prepare a package to go out to the city as soon as we can.
Meanwhile, I wanted to say, that obviously we need some kind of awesome music system in our building. Does someone feel like making some kind of smart playlist system where we can each add our music and then it will play only mine? That’d be awesome…

first of all: many apologies for replying so late. i was really overjoyed when i received and read the letter, and did honestly intend to write sooner, but various things got in the way.
anyway, to the subject at hand: i love your idea, and i truly think that if anyone can get it to work, it’s you two. i’m definitely interested in providing whatever help and support i can, but right now i’m not sure where i would fit in. just this week, science has become my day job (i’m a student no more), and i’m now committed to a project for the next 9 or so months here in germany. if that all goes well, i plan to start a phd in cognitive neuroscience, which means a good 3 or more years of hard work.
so, it seems i won’t be in the position to work in this future ideal workplace (unless the science thing doesn’t work out for me), but i’m certainly interested in working with you towards this ideal. if you need someone to offer critical responses to ideas, to do any boring secretarial stuff or bake cookies (idea-shaped cookies?), count me in.
in conclusion: love the idea; might not get to benefit directly from it, but will certainly contribute what i can.

Tom, Richard, y’all, I think the initiative is something that can work. I’m in. I like the idea of different disciplines and experiences coming together to explore and create new possibilities, either artictic, idealistic and even scientific. From the outside a kubus looks like, well, a kubus, but it also represents the framework in which ideas and projects can grow (out-of-their-boxes).
It starts with connecting the right people within the right environment. A place that is both organized (green), flexible (blue) and real (white i guess). So what about a construction with a hive-like exterior with transparant working places that suit the specific needs of the people working there and in its center a open space where thoughts and creativity can run freely and where ‘common’ projects are created and developed for all to see and work on. I don’t know of a place in R’dam that fits this description, but others may…
Different kinds of people mean different kinds of life/work styles with some of us ‘on the move’ most of the time (or no time at all) and others living.working.breathing in the same space-time continuum indefinitely, and others again living abroad and willing to contribute virtually via the web. So a kubus organization has to have some sort of (real and virtual) structure not only for accommodation purposes but also for administrative, financial and even marketing purposes.
Another thing I’d like to propose/discuss is establishing some sort of trust fund (maintained by the kubus foundation or holding) in which revenue from the ‘common projects’ is transferred and can be used to further develop kubus. It may for example also provide people with the financial tools to help develop themselves and their work/services. A small percentage of this revenue may then be wired back into the fund. Even ping-pong tables need to be replaced sometime.
Anyway these are some of my thoughts. I wil leave you guys and galls with a snapshot of the supreme kubus: link.

On the left side we see a traditional company structure.
On the right the way of the kubus is illustrated.
One can clearly see that the instalment of a pingpong table changes things quite dramatically.
The question remains though, will it be blue or will it be green?
I tend to lean towards the blue ones.

While we’re waiting for the slomos to post up their responses (there’s a fair share coming still), why don’t you all try to describe your ideal work place. Please do not constrain yourself to whatever we have put in the letter, just spew your mind about what you feel would be the utopia of spending the day like working, making a little money perhaps, and doing the things you are interested in.

Hi Tom, Richard, and y’all, Putting my footprint here in this blog feels like coming home and like the beginning of a new journey at the same time. The writings on the wall here are dripping with enthusiasm and inspiration, and I’m very happy to put in my part. It’s very nice to find some familiar names here and I’m anxious to meet the rest.
Working in the music and audio field as composer and engineer has been an interesting endeavor sofar. I’m doing alright, but it has been quite solo sofar. I would really enjoy being part of a bigger organization, and still be able to pursue my own goals. Currently I own a studio, but the ping pong room is suffering from low occupation, so sharing one will be much more fun. I’d really enjoy the company.
For the cube I’d like to contribute music and audio for promofilms and artprojects and whatever else is needed. Also I know how to operate a vacuumcleaner pretty well, and I even was a chemical engineer once (until the factory exploded.)
I look forward to being part of this crossinspirational blender.

Tom and I have been (in some occasions even jointly) living in creative yet social environments for quite some time now. One might even state that we are little experts on the subject.
Yes, always working hard and building up the latest promising project, we also ceased the opportunity to watch strange Asian and Russian cinema, listen to music about all trees in the forest and eating miles of cotton-ball-cheese from a jar. It was quite the life.
Now, ladies and gentleman, having traveled forth and back from the likes of USA, Rijswijk, Panama, Delft, Vienna, Laren and London, we know (in some occasions even jointly) that the Body Mass Index of creativity could not be more decadently established than Rotterdam – main port of Europe and city of Bokito.
And lord knows that I have still failed to mention the rise and levitation of Richard. Not many men of his kind are born around these territories, enabling unperturbed mothers to let their daughters go out and play. Soothing for some, frustrating for others, since his ingenious presence could fill up all our rooms and create for a new golden age of intellectual prosperity.
In other words, let the finest of the finest join hands and CREATE. Like they say in France: ‘Arbeit macht frei‘, and I couldn’t agree more with those friendly breadstick-eaters. I have been fiddling around in the fields of digital filmmaking and my small (not medium) enterprise is celebrating its tenth birthday this year. Would it be less than awe-inspiring if I could provide for some of my modest sauce, and be able to work together with the finest craftsmen. I have no other option than to say YES and pre-order piles of breadsticks and cotton-ball-cheese.

Dear Richard and Tom,
about a year ago Tom told me about this idea in a restaurant where the food and service was quite forgettable. Tom’s idea, however, was quite memorable. It was the first thing that popped into my mind when this summer I heard about Urban Resort Projects. A friend of mine, Doreen Westphal, who is the creator and owner of Krejci, took office in ‘het Volkskrantgebouw‘ in Amsterdam, where URP also has the ambition to create an environment where different disciplines meet and inspire each other. I have been there briefly and it seemed like a very social place to work.
In my understanding you want to go a step further with this project by wanting more than just creating office space for small inspiring businesses. You want to actually unify living and working by creating a social living space where it will be fun to work at. I think the idea is beautiful. I have to say the idea does raise a lot of practical questions, but it seems they are quite irrelevant in this stage of your project. Currently, it is about concept and vision and I like it. Lots.
The way I’m thinking about things now, I’d like to get started as a computergame-designer for an existing company, before I start thinking about my own small business. However, starting my own business is what I intend to eventually do. And I think that, might I ever get that far, I’d be very happy a project like Kubus exists. I have many interests and I’d want nothing more than to work and live in an environment which inspires me. Art is about many things and this project could offer them. You can put me on that list!

Since secret meetings with Ilona in Utrecht, and whisperings in the Kanalweg over buttered scones and tea, I was witness this remarkable idea taking shape. The productive and creative talents of Tom and Ri-chard have been a remarkable thing to behold over the years, and combined … well to say the least I am very excited.
As you both know I have less control over my geographical flex-abilité these days, however I will endeavour to be as involved as exertion permits.
Whether via a streaming webcam on my cardigan, or a gps beacon in mijn broek, I would like to make my presence felt.

And Richard, with whom I yet have the pleasure to meet,
Tuesday evening I met, upon my arrival from the family printingfirm, your letter on my mat. It read no date so I could only hope to have found it in time. (I have recently put a NO-NO sticker on my door to keep out all the advertisement, for important mail had a tendency of getting lost between it. All the same I could not assure myself wether I had found the letter on the date it was delivered. Hence the tension that I feel concerning the timing of my respons, noting the assumption made in the last paragraph of the letter, and thereupon the start of the letter, where there’s a metaphore of a chicken in winter time; the season that seems to already have started).
I shall begin my reaction with a sketch of my behaviour, alone in my room, directly after reading your letter.
What I did was kneel down on my carpet and cry soundless bursts of joy. I danced motionless, with an utmost strain on all the muscles in my body, and tears welling in eyes that shot through the walls, chasing the multitude of happy omens they could see play before them.
This episode continued itself in waves, until a point of exhaustion that made me grab the bottles of Gin and Tonic I had stored in icy cold.
I then called upon a higher force to grant me back my cool, thus enabling me to carefully cut three razor-thin slices of a lime I had kept especially for this combination of fluids. At my desk this, together with some tabacco, brought me to a start of calmth. I advanced into poetry:
Realer than the bicep-boosted fist shouting from the elbow;
Than a chant too real to let it’s cheer to the ear or the pumping roar for ignition
Without reluctance and without fear ’cause it seems to get realer than that.
Realer than a friend would grabble pieces off, when a witness of the fit,
For it’s no more like a puzzle when realer than this.
That if now the assassin had show, rather words than rage be found.
That he would turn his strike ’round into the heart of his conviction.
Or realer even than choices spent on a vigorous reliance in poisons
And all those familiar songs; And the bore to withhold the new ones from the self-induced lore
When through the hoops of aging down, it just might get something realer
And so forth, you get the impression. I emptied those bottles half way down and awoke without a trace of hangover, feeling revived.

I remember getting very excited about this idea when I first talked to Tom about it about 4 months ago. As someone who works in a creative field, the type of set up discussed in your proposal sounds amazing! The more walks of life and people I can pull from, feed off of, or get inspired by, the better my work will be. In additional, having a more free form work environment allows me to work in a manner or time that produces the best concepts. It helps too, that bean bags, foosball, and ping pong tables were mentioned since they are a staple of any advertising agency.
This project matches so well with my personal ambitions. I hope to freelance full time, so that I can work on many different clients for many different agencies. However, it will take a lot of work to get my name respected and common enough to make freelance a stable living. I suppose my only concerns with the project are the practical ones. At this stage in my career it would be very difficult for me to move my freelance work to Rotterdam, with most of my connections in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York. In the future however, I may be enough of a self sufficient entity to work with businesses distant from Rotterdam or with agencies near and around Rotterdam and the Netherlands. As my career begins to progress, I hope this opportunity because a very possible reality as it would be an amazing project to be a part of. In short, count me in.

Dear Tom (and the mysterious Richard),
I just got your letter in the mail, and i have to say that it sounds
really exciting!!! (exciting enough to overuse punctuation even). i
guess that i must have initially misunderstood the overall mission, and
thought that it was more specifically based around architecture. i now
understand this cooperative as being much more interdisciplinary and
given the nature of the architecture that i would like to do in the
future, it is crutial that this type of collaborative approach is used.
if sustainability in architecture is to make a significant difference
it has have interactive participation across many fields from the
conception of a project on. this however includes engineers and
science based people as well as artists/architects/designers.
in this vain, when i listed my competencies i was looking too narrowly
at architecture. as my academic background is in fine art, i have a
lot of experience in painting and printmaking. i think that
printmaking in particular has potential in this co-op in terms of
producing our owm publications/propaganda. hosting community classes
or workshops could also help suplement us financially.
i look forward to hearing more, and i will continue to think about the
organization of all of this. i applaude your efforts.
